Preparing your site is vital to creating a perfect finish. Follow these general steps to ensure your concrete will remain smooth and strong for years to come.
Prepare
- Dig down to hard ground or make a base of hard core and flatten.
- It is important to get your base as flat as possible, to be able to calculate the exact depth.
- Footings should be dug at equal width and water should be pumped or bucketed out if there has been heavy rain.
- Bases need to be shuttered using strong boards that have been secured into the ground, to prevent the weight of the concrete from pushing them out wards.
- If the ground is particularly wet/damp, a polythene sheeting may need to be layed underneath the concrete to prevent water from seeping into your concrete.
- Concrete can now be poured onto your prepared site ready to be layed and levelled.

Remember
- Light rain does not usually have a major effect on fresh concrete and can be left to evaporate naturally.
- Heavy rain can cause dips and troughs in newly laid concrete, so try to be prepared with some form of cover. Do not allow the cover to touch the concrete or it could leave a mark.
- Frost can cause concrete to crumble if it freezes during the occurring process.
